Athena, also known as muskmelon, is the most popular melon in the USA. This variety has peach-colored flesh and a very sweet flavor. Each melon weighs about 4 pounds, with heavy netting and no ribs. For the best start in the garden, plant three on slightly elevated hills. Harvest when the stem easily detaches from the fruit upon lifting. Keep the hills well watered but try to keep the leaves dry. Using furrows around the plant hill is a great way to water and fertilize. Matures in 86 days.
